Ambridge student tests negative for mumps

AMBRIDGE, Pa. — A Highlands Elementary School student being monitored for mumps tested negative for the virus, according to school officials in Ambridge.

A Channel 11 News viewer sent us a picture of a letter that went home to parents Tuesday, warning them that a fifth-grader had a suspected case.

On Wednesday, Ambridge Area School District superintendent Dr. Cynthia Zurchin received a call from the health department that the student did not have the mumps.

School officials said they are glad they acted proactively, and will send another letter home to parents.

Dr Ruta Marfatia, of Allegheny Health Network, said the mumps vaccine is about 88 percent effective and that the best way to prevent the virus is good hand-washing and hygiene.
