The sandwich was first introduced June 24, 2014, as a limited-time offer.
“It’s hard to believe I agreed to make a new sandwich – but our customers are going to love it! Why is it called what it is?” said Toni Haggerty, general manager at Primanti Brothers in The Strip District since 1974, when the sandwich was first introduced. “There are several reasons. First, it’s loaded with ham and bacon; there’s your pig. And it’s got turkey; they fly. However, the main reason is that for the longest time we heard from many Primanti Bros. fans (both on our social platforms and in-store) that we would add a new sandwich in our original style….WHEN PIGS FLY!”
This time around, the sandwich will benefit hungry customers and members of the community who rely on the food bank.
“Feeding people is what we do, whether it’s in our restaurants or in the community. So we’re excited that as we roll out When Pigs Fly, we’re also rolling in the Piggy Banks to help raise funds for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank,” said Haggerty.
Primanti Brothers will be raising money through customer donations, and will also make a donation for every When Pigs Fly sandwich that is sold.
The sandwich will be available from June 16 to Aug. 31.
There will be a launch party at the Primanti Brothers in Market Square Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
