WASHINGTON — Several schools in western Pennsylvania have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized a total of 335 schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Here is the list of the local schools to receive the honor:
- First Street Elementary School, Canon-McMillan School District
- Bentworth High School, Bentworth School District
- Albert F. Baker Elementary School, Upper St. Clair School District
- McCormick Elementary School, Moon Area School District
- Slippery Rock Area High School, Slippery Rock Area School District
The Department will honor all of the National Blue Ribbon Schools at a recognition ceremony on Nov. 9-10 in Washington, D.C.
Each school will receive an award plaque and a flag as symbols of their accomplishments.
