SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Shaler Township Police Department is cracking down on aggressive driving along Route 8.
Signs and barriers along Route 8 warn drivers about the rules in work zones.
Northbound traffic crosses over into the southbound lanes between Spencer Lane extension and 8th Avenue. The lane change helps these crews do rock scaling and structure work.
Tom Watson works at Mctighe’s flower and garden market along Route 8.
" I know if you’re driving and you see that you’re going 10 miles over, which they lowered it from 40 to 30, " said Watson.
Shaler Township police are helping PennDOT by beefing up traffic enforcement.
Just Thursday morning, Shaler Township police issued 20 tickets during a 2 period for aggressive driving violations in this road work zone.
They hope added police presence will deter aggressive drivers who speed, tailgate, or ignore traffic signals.
“Two weeks ago, I pulled out of here and got hit when the lane was closed when I left work,” said Watson.
He says it is nerve-wracking driving on that stretch of Route 8.
“The insurance handled it well and everything was fine and it wasn’t anything detrimental but yeah there’s lots of close calls,” said Watson.
Shaler Township Police say fines double and sometimes drivers can lose their license for speeding in active work zones.
