Soldiers & Sailors holds veterans ceremony to display new 9/11 statue

PITTSBURGH — A ceremony will be held Friday evening to honor post 9/11 veterans of the Global War on Terrorism at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Oakland.

On display will be a new statue, “America’s Defenders,” which is dedicated to those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The life-size bronze monument features a male and a female soldier representing those who have served since 2001 in the Global War on Terrorism. The statue was designed and sculpted by Soldiers & Sailors Curator Michael Kraus.

The statue is displayed on the Bigelow Boulevard steps. It will be relocated to Remembrance Park, the future renovation project of the memorial’s front lawn.

The ceremony will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited as well as all post 9/11 veterans of the Global War on Terrorism, who are encouraged to register. More information can be found HERE.
