South Side improvement district proposal draws support, opposition at public hearing

PITTSBURGH — During a public hearing Wednesday, a proposed South Side East Carson Street Improvement District received significant support from local stakeholders.

Over 20 business owners and residents from Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood came together for the hearing hosted by Pittsburgh City Council’s Committee on Hearings and Policy. Although a majority of the speakers spoke in favor, the hearing did not go without some speaking against the proposed district.

The improvement district proposal was introduced in May by District 3 Councilman Bob Charland, who represents the South Side. The proposed boundaries include the East Carson Street Local Neighborhood Commercial (LNC) zoning district, portions surrounding Bedford Square and some other select commercial properties.
