CANONSBURG, Pa. — A police standoff in Washington County early Thursday morning prompted surrounding roads to be shut down for several hours.

Investigators said that around 3:30 a.m., three men tried breaking into a home along South Central Avenue in Canonsburg.

A man who lives in the building said he saw a masked man trying to steal a television from an apartment.

Two men who live in the building told Channel 11’s Dave Bondy that they were held at gunpoint during the invasion.

“One of them had been in bed, and they went in and dragged him out at gunpoint and put him on his knees on the floor,” Canonsburg Police Chief R.T. Bell said.

Police headed to the area and were able to take two of the men into custody, while a third hid inside.

Nearby streets were blocked while police tried to arrest the third suspect. During the standoff, officers were able to safely get the homeowners out of the house.

“I didn’t know if I was going to hear gunfire or not. I was worried about my kids,” neighbor Colleen Domick said.

The third suspect was taken into custody around 6 a.m.

“Probably the best thing that happened is that these three actors didn’t decide to come out all at once because our officers would have been in a bad situation,” Bell said.

All nearby roads have since been reopened, and the homeowners and nearby residents have been allowed back inside.
