The Pennsylvania State Police Troop D issued a warning regarding financial scams after residents lost amounts reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. Police said scam methods include gift cards, in-person cash pickups and bitcoin ATM transactions.
Troop D covers Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
In several instances, scammers impersonate federal or local authorities to coerce victims. Fraudsters instruct residents to meet with an “agent” to hand over cash or gold to avoid legal consequences.
State police advised residents never to agree to meet individuals for payment or allow unknown people into their homes. Authorities noted that in-person pickup scams have increased, with criminals arranging meeting locations to collect cash or gift cards directly. Scammers are also instructing some victims to complete transactions using bitcoin ATM machines.
Gift card scams remain particularly common across the region. Police emphasized that gift cards are intended for gifts rather than financial payments, warning that funds are typically unrecoverable once a scammer receives the card number and PIN.
Police highlighted several red flags of potential fraud, including urgent demands, high-pressure tactics, secrecy instructions and offers that seem too good to be true. State police urge anyone who receives suspicious claims or unusual payment requests to stop immediately and verify the situation with their local Police Department before sending any money.
