PITTSBURGH — Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is taking ownership of Sunday’s loss in New England.
While he wasn’t making any excuses, he called some of their early-season struggles first-year bumps, saying once again the responsibility falls on the coaching staff.
McCarthy pointed to their lack of consistency offensively, saying there’s a number of aspects they need to clean up, from pass protection to getting the run game going.
He said his message to the team on Monday started with where they are right now, and where they’re going. He also shared that he told a player they don’t have a talent issue.
He said preparation is important, performance is important, but they have to play above their own standard.
“Let’s just make sure we’re cleaning our own house each and every week, and it’s early in the season. It’s two games. But when the information is consistent two weeks in a row, you’ve got to pay attention to that. And we’ve had some mistakes that have been repeated. And that’s, you know, those are the things we need to clean up. Football is not perfect, but you train in the mindset of perfection to achieve your goal. And we just got to just stay in tune with how we’re doing things,” McCarthy said.
An injury update on Michael Pittman Jr., who we spoke with in the locker room this morning: It’s a different injury from the one the receiver had during training camp, but he has made progress.
He’ll be part of the evaluation group for Wednesday morning ahead of the team’s first practice of the week.
