PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of components for lithium-ion batteries led by entrepreneur and Carnegie Mellon University Professor Jay Whitacre is amping up its visibility after more than a year in stealth mode.
Stratus Materials Inc., formerly known as 33 Tech, has strong pedigree: It finished a $12 million Series A financing round that was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and DNS Capital. Breakthrough Energy Ventures was founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates to fund big sustainable energy technologies. Along with Whitacre, who is CEO and chief technology officer, is co-founder and President Scott Pearson and co-founder Wei Wu, a former executive at Aquion Energy and Amazon, and Jared Mitchell.
