PITTSBURGH — An investigation was held at a local school after a student found a handgun in a bathroom on Friday.
A statement from board president Paul Spradley said a 5th-grade student found the gun in a bathroom at Urban Pathways K5 College Charter School at around 2:20 p.m. The student quickly reported they had found the gun and it was quickly retrieved.
School officials say investigators learned the gun belonged to one of the guards who was hired under a contract to protect the school. That guard is no longer working for Urban Pathways.
Spradley said the school has told the outside vendor who provided their security services to forbid guards from bringing weapons into the school anymore.
No one was hurt during the incident.
“We want to commend our student for making a responsible decision to immediately inform an adult about the discovery. We also want to commend all of our staff members who took quick and effective action to secure the weapon and restore safety to the building,” Urban Pathways said in a statement.
Counselors are available to any student who feels like they need help processing the situation.
