PITTSBURGH — A man was taken into custody after a several-hour-long SWAT standoff Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh’s Larimer neighborhood.
Pittsburgh police and SWAT team members went to the 100 block of Auburn Street around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to serve an arrest warrant.
Pittsburgh police Sgt. Charles Henderson said crews shut down the entire block while they worked to get the man, later identified as Timothy Binion, to surrender.
Channel 11’s Shelby Zarotney reported that Binion, 23, was wanted on unspecified felony charged. After more than three hours, he was taken into custody about 6 a.m.
“We had information that he was in a bedroom on the second floor and there were firearms available, so we went in and we came to an impasse where it was no longer safe for officers to proceed,” Henderson said. “So we called the SWAT team in and they took him into custody.”
Neighbors who live on Binion’s street said they were surprised to hear of the arrest.
“I’m surprised because the street is fairly quiet. I was surprised by what was going on,” Mary Bray said. “If you came out, they told you to go back in the house.”
Binion is being treated and evaluated at a local hospital, and will then be transported to the Allegheny County Jail.
