LIGONIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews worked to clean up a portion of Route 30 in Ligonier Township Wednesday after a tractor-trailer overturned, spilling syrup onto the roadway Tuesday night.

Authorities said the driver of the truck was hauling barrels of flavored syrup and lost control on a bend about 6 p.m., causing more than a dozen 55-gallon drums to spill onto the road when it overturned.

Officials said the syrup is used in a drink called Cherry Lime Rickey.

The Department of Environmental Protection monitored the cleanup out of concern for wildlife in the area. Crews worked to prevent the syrup from running off into a nearby creek.

One person was pulled from the overturned truck, authorities said. That person’s condition has not been released.

A section of Route 30 that had been closed while crews worked to clean up the accident has since reopened.
