WILKINSBURG, Pa. — A public hearing on an already existing data center did not go on as scheduled on Thursday.
The company that owns it had requested permission from Wilkinsburg Borough to make an addition, but now they want more time.
That request was granted.
The application involved the data center along Brinton Road. It’s right on the Wilkinsburg - Edgewood line.
IM Pittsburgh wants to install two backup generators there and needs a variance to do it. They would go inside at least 20 feet from the property line.
An attorney representing the company spoke briefly before requesting a continuance.
“There is no physical expansion of the data center itself. It’s just adding two backup generators,” Attorney Brendan Lucas said. “Just recently we became aware of plans that showed our proposed generators being approved back in 2021. We’d like more time to look at that.”
Lucas, an attorney with Buchanan, Ingersoll and Rooney, also denied claims from members of the public that the addition would triple the size of the data center.
“I feel like something’s going on behind the scenes. Like, they didn’t want to hear the public comment,” Moira Dunn said. She was among several community members prepared to speak out against the variance approval.
“I’m just concerned. Data centers are a use I don’t think our country needs more of,” she said.
If there is another public hearing, it will be advertised. No possible date was discussed.
