This year is the final run for the current Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre version of ‘The Nutcracker’

It’s the final year for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s current version of “The Nutcracker.”

The company has scheduled 24 performances of the ballet between Dec. 4-27 at the Benedum Center.

Choreographed and conceived by former PBT Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr, the production has served as a central holiday tradition for the organization since its debut 25 years ago.

PBT Artistic Director Adam W. McKinney highlighted the role the current version has played for regional audiences over its run.

“Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker has made an indelible mark on audiences over the past quarter of a century,” McKinney said. “With its beautiful costumes, soaring score, charming storyline and memorable Pittsburgh connections, it has become a cherished tradition that provides an unforgettable way to experience the holiday season with loved ones.”

Set in turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh, the ballet incorporates local history, sports teams and city landmarks into the narrative. The storyline follows Marie and the Nutcracker Prince on a journey through falling snow into the Land of Enchantment.

The production features more than 100 artists and a Pittsburgh celebrity guest star in Act I.

Staged across five scenes, the performance includes a full-stage battle with sword fighting and more than 30 magic tricks created by a professional magician. The production also features a Christmas tree that expands to 15 times its original size, along with 150 costumes and 1,500 accessories.

An all-new production of “The Nutcracker” is scheduled to premiere in December 2027.
