PITTSBURGH — Nearly 10,000 runners and walkers completed the 49th Annual Richard S. Caligiuri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark over the weekend.
Attendees hailed from 39 states and Washington, D.C., according to event organizer P3R.
Established in 1977 by the late Pittsburgh Mayor Richard S. Caligiuri, the annual road race has drawn nearly half a million participants over its 48-year history.
The event set a record with 574 participants completing the One GREAT Challenge by finishing both the 5K and 10K races to earn an extra medal.
Additionally, 16 men known as the “Perfect Great Racers” completed the 10K for the 49th consecutive year, maintaining a streak that began at the inaugural running.
“Each year, the Great Race brings together generations of runners and walkers to celebrate movement, community and the city we’re proud to call home,” Race Director Brian Katze said. “Seeing nearly 10,000 participants come together this weekend is a testament to the enduring legacy of this event and the special place it holds in Pittsburgh. As we look ahead to the Great Race’s 50th anniversary in 2027, we’re excited to celebrate this incredible tradition and everyone who has helped make it a Pittsburgh tradition.”
