CARNEGIE, Pa. — The Heidelberg fire department reported that a transformer explosion occurred in the 2200 block of Washington Pike Thursday afternoon.
The explosion caused the wires to fall on the field and sparked a large brush fire, according to officials.

The situation left businesses within the Collier Township shopping plaza without electricity and air conditioning, causing them to close.

Officials said the incident would cause Washington Pike to be closed between Greentree Road and Thomas Run Road for several hours.
As of 3 p.m. Thursday, electricity had been restored but roads remained closed due to a hanging power line. Crews are assessing the situation.
