CARNEGIE, Pa.,None — At least two cars crashed Thursday afternoon on the Parkway west trying to dodge tires that came off of a transit bus.

Port Authority of Allegheny County spokesman Jim Ritchie said the bus was on Interstate 376 heading into the city from Pittsburgh International Airport when both of its left rear wheels came off about 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

It happened near Carnegie, where the bus was about to exit the interstate for a busway.

The vehicle has two rear tires on each side, and the driver was able to maneuver it safely off the highway, officials said.

No injuries were reported when the two cars crashed trying to avoid the tires.

Brad Reeser was unable to stop in time when he noticed the wheels, and he and Paul Thompson had a minor collision.

“The tires came off the bus and jumped out into the fast lane,” Reeser said. “Everyone just locked up.”

“I was coming down the hill and everybody slammed on their brakes,” Thompson said. “I slammed on mine to not hit the car in front of me, but I got side-swiped by a car behind me that couldn’t stop.”

The cause of the problem remains under investigation.

A spokesperson for the Port Authority said the incident is considered isolated and there is no plan to inspect other buses.
