EMSWORTH, Pa. — A nationwide Halloween project dubbed “Trick or Tater” is giving children a choice between a potato and a candy bar.

The campaign follows an informal effort last year by hosts who handed out raw potatoes after seeing the idea online.

Emsworth resident Jared Sessi tried the idea last year and ran out of spuds after unexpected demand from trick-or-treaters.

“This year they actually decided to make kids choose, so this year is all about one or the other,” Sessi said. “If you can see, trick or tater. They get the choice, they have a potato or candy bar.”

Participating households across the country will send their final choice counts to the Idaho Potato Commission to determine how many children picked potatoes over candy bars.

Sessi’s is one of about 16 households across 13 states taking part in the project.
