PITTSBURGH — A rideshare driver is charged with sexually assaulting a woman he picked up from a party near Pitt’s campus.
Reporter Gabriella DeLuca confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the driver is in custody, two months after police say he took the woman to her home, then raped her.
According to police, in March, Al Ghurairi picked up a woman who was celebrating “Pitts Patty Day” on Semple Street, after her friends called her a ride.
Detectives tell Channel 11, the victim’s friend told Al Ghurairi, “This is my friend. She’s drunk and needs to get home safe.”
He responded, “Yeah, I can tell.”
That’s when police say he drove her to her home in Shadyside and raped her.
The next day, the victim called police and went to the hospital for a sexual assault exam.
After weeks of investigating license plate readers, Uber records, and interviewing witnesses, officers just charged Al Ghurairi. He is now in the Allegheny County Jail
A spokesperson for Uber told Channel 11 that he has been banned since the incident was reported in March.
