What will today’s medical technology look like 50 years from now? UPMC employees are giving future generations the chance to find out.

They filled a time capsule to mark the upcoming opening of the new Kamin Tower at UPMC Presbyterian.

Among the items placed into the time capsule are surgical staplers donated by surgeon Louis Alcaron, which represent state-of-the-art medical technology today.

“I’m sure these devices 50 years from now will seem quite quaint and antiquated and museum pieces in 50 years,” Alarcon said.

Other items included in the capsule are scrubs, photos and a terrible towel.

Construction on the new tower has been underway since 2022. It’s scheduled to begin patient care early next year.
