PITTSBURGH — The UPMC Rehabilitation Institute celebrated the first anniversary of its Empowered Esports program on Saturday.
It’s a monthly adaptive video gaming event that features special controllers customized to each player’s abilities.
It also gives those with disabilities of all ages a chance to play and get out into the community.
“Adaptive gaming is one of those things that allows people to really be out in the community,” said Matthew Berwick, with the United Spinal Association. “They might not be able to participate in other sports that are more physical, but everybody can play a game.”
Participants can also be evaluated for adaptive gaming equipment so they can play at home, with grants covering some of the equipment cost.
