PITTSBURGH — A report from UPMC said the health system provided more than $1.5 billion in community benefits — whether it’s charity care for people who can’t pay, health and wellness programs or medical research and education — during 2021.
The Pittsburgh-based health care system publishes the total amount of community benefits in a report published annually under rules of the Internal Revenue Service. It represents 15% of UPMC’s net patient revenue. Last year’s report totaled $1.7 billion under the same rules for 2020 across Pennsylvania, western New York and western Maryland.
UPMC divides itself into five regions: Pittsburgh, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York, north central Pennsylvania, central Pennsylvania and west central Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The nonprofit detailed the community benefits in each region and said that, beyond those, it also had $2.5 billion in what it called broader community impact including local, state and federal taxes paid, investments in technologies and facilities, and Covid-19 expenses.
