U.S. Steel backs Biden administration’s steel tariff fight

United States Steel Corp. is striking back against the World Trade Organization’s rejection of steel and aluminum tariffs meant to protect American companies from unfair foreign competition.

The Biden administration told the WTO that it won’t be lifting the so-called Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum despite the organization’s report calling for that to happen after complaints by China and other countries. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said it was a matter of national security and stood firm against WTO pressure.

“The WTO has proven ineffective at stopping severe and persistent nonmarket excess capacity from the PRC (China) and others that is an existential threat to market-oriented steel and aluminum sectors and a threat to U.S. national security,” said Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Adam Hodge on Friday.
