According to investigators, at least one vehicle crashed into an auto body shop and multiple parked cars. Chopper 11 flew over the scene and showed cars stacked on top of each other.
"He hit it at such a high rate of speed, he sheared all bolts off and carried it with him as he came in the gas station,” said Whitaker Fire Chief John Munsie.
Bob Ackerman, the owner of the shop, told Channel 11's Brandon Hudson that he was inside with a worker at the time of the crash.
Ackerman said he heard what sounded like a car exploding before he went outside to see what happened.
"I thought a car just exploded. I ran outside and saw a car on top of other cars,” Ackerman said.
According to Ackerman, the driver was unconscious and trapped in his vehicle.
"(The employee) called 911. I came out to check and see if he was ok,” Ackerman said.
Luckily, the cars he hit into were unoccupied at the time.
Ackerman told Hudson this isn’t the first time someone has hit his building. He expects damage from Wednesday’s incident to be in the thousands.
"There's thousands of dollars' worth of damage to the store, the cars, the poles,” Ackerman said.
Traffic was delayed in the area of the Rankin Bridge while crews worked to clear and investigate the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
