PITTSBURGH — It's been a year since four people were killed in a flash flood on Washington Boulevard in Highland Park.
A storm dumped an inch and a half of rain on the area in just an hour last August. The water trapped drivers near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Allegheny River Boulevard.
Kimberly Griffin and her daughters Brenna and Mikaela died after they became trapped inside their minivan. Mary Saflin, 72, was also killed when she was swept away by the water.
City and state officials are spending more than $1 million to prevent future flooding along the same stretch of roadway.
