PITTSBURGH — The Urban Tap on the South Side has been on East Carson Street since 2013 and the owner says he’s never had an issue like this after a rat was captured on camera inside the restaurant.

The owner immediately contacted the Allegheny County Health Department who came on Monday morning.

Video taken last week inside the restaurant showed a large rat near the beer taps. That video was then posted to social media and now the owner is responding directly to the post by apologizing and letting people know what they’re doing to make things right.

Monday, the Urban Tap responded directly to the post saying:

“First and foremost — we are truly sorry. Seeing that is upsetting, and we completely understand why people are frustrated and disappointed. We take food safety and cleanliness extremely seriously, and we know this situation does not reflect the standard we hold ourselves to.”

Neighbors who live on the South Side didn’t want to be identified but came to The Urban Tap’s defense.

A South Side resident said, “That shouldn’t distract from his business at all. That place is wonderful. It’s always crowded. It’s one of the neighborhood favorites he is an amazing business owner that gives back and he keeps investing in the South Side.”

In its social media post, The Urban Tap provided the Allegheny County Health Department’s inspection report related to this incident, as well as a biannual inspection done just last week.

The Urban Tap said, “They provided clear direction on areas for improvement in response to this situation. They also confirmed there was no evidence of an infestation and acknowledged that we were proactively addressing the issue.”

For context: The owner says they’ve seen more rodents ever since construction started behind their building, but he says that does not excuse what happened.
