Water advisory issued at Butler VA due to bacteria

BUTLER, Pa. — Channel 11 News has learned that the water at the Butler VA has been shut off because of bacteria.

Administrators with the VA told Channel 11's Lisa Sylvester that they discovered the problem during routine testing.

Those tests revealed high bacteria levels -- higher than would be allowed by EPA standards -- coming from the water that comes into their main facility.

Officials said the VA immediately issued a water advisory, which means they shut off all water fountains in the building and they’re giving staff and veterans bottles water and hand sanitizer to use.

Though they don’t know the specific type of bacteria in the water, the Butler VA says they know it’s not Legionella because a separate test cleared it for that.

Butler VA officials say they’re working to get the current bacteria problem fixed and they hope to know more within the next seven to 10 days.

Channel 11 News has previously reported on problems at the Butler VA.

In March 2014, high levels of lead were found in the water. It was determined that old pipes were the cause of that, and all those fixtures were replaced.
