WASHINGTON, Pa. — A Washington County family is left picking up the pieces after a water main break sent water gushing into their home for hours.
A geyser hosed down the home on Franklin Farms Road in Washington after a 16-inch water main blew out a window.
Christina Shwallon said the situation woke her up with a loud noise.
“I woke up to some very loud noises, thought it was hail, I opened the blind and one of the rocks hit my window, and it kind of exploded,” Shwallon said.
In the light of day, a soggy mess was left behind. A bed was caked with mud and debris. Water from the outside filled a bathroom sink
Chris Bornes also lives at the home. He said he has been dealing with cleaning up the mess.
“We have a fairly large backyard. There are shingles halfway down the backyard; that’s how hard the water was going,” Bornes said.
The sound you hear is of heavy-duty fans... trying to dry things out.
“Basically everything is destroyed. It blew a large section of the roof off,” Bornes said.
There’s never a great time for something like this, but it’s especially bad because their daughter is getting married this weekend.
But something good has come out of this:
“One good thing is we realize what great neighbors we have; they came out, offered assistance, and - - couldn’t ask for better neighbors,” Bornes said.
The kicker is that the family and the fire department called the water company, and they could not reach anyone.
