LATROBE, Pa. — Weiss Furniture, a family-owned retailer operating in Latrobe for 107 years, will close permanently following a final liquidation sale.
Owner Dalia Dunhoff announced her upcoming retirement in conjunction with the business closure.
The business, located at 533 Depot St., was founded in 1919 by father and son Joseph and Hymen Weiss. Hymen Weiss took full ownership in 1937 after his father’s death, while his wife, Freida Weiss, provided interior design services for the store.
In 1950, Hymen Weiss’ brother-in-law, William Dunhoff, joined the company as a partner. Two years later, the business relocated and expanded to a 23,000-square-foot showroom at the corner of Depot Street and Lincoln Avenue. Following Hymen Weiss’ retirement in 1973, William Dunhoff assumed full control and was later joined by his sons, David Dunhoff and Richard Dunhoff.
Richard Dunhoff acquired full ownership in 2007 and operated the business alongside his wife, Dalia Dunhoff, for 16 years. After Richard Dunhoff died three years ago, Dalia Dunhoff continued operating the business as sole owner.
Dalia Dunhoff, owner of Weiss Furniture, reflected on the store’s deep ties to local residents.
“My family has had the privilege of helping generations of families furnish their homes and celebrate life’s milestones,” Dunhoff said. “Richard cared deeply about this business and the people we served and I’m incredibly thankful for the loyal customers, employees and friends who have sustained Weiss Furniture for more than a century.”
Beyond retail operations, three generations of Dunhoff women — Gladys, Diane and Deidra — volunteered at the Latrobe Hospital Gift Shop, where Gladys Dunhoff logged more than 50 years of service. The family also maintained active involvement in the greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The inventory offered during the final liquidation at 533 Depot St. includes living room, bedroom and dining furniture, mattresses and home accessories. Featured brands include Ashley, Archbold, Best, Catnapper, England, Homestretch, Jackson, Jofran, La-Z-Boy, Liberty, Null, Serta, Southern Motion, Southerland, Spring Air and Vaughan-Bassett.
The going-out-of-business liquidation sale opens to the public Thursday, Sept. 3.
