PITTSBURGH — A war memorial was toppled over in Pittsburgh on Sunday morning.
Channel 11 crews saw the World War I monument, located in the area of Lowrie Street and Ley Street in Troy Hill, lying on the ground and surrounded by caution tape.
Bronze eagles normally affixed to the monument were on the ground nearby, along with scattered mini American flags.
Our crew saw tire marks in the road, but the circumstances that led up to the memorial falling over weren’t immediately clear. Channel 11 has contacted public safety officials to learn more.
This isn’t the first time that the memorial has been knocked over. In 2014, a driver said he hit a patch of ice and slid right into the memorial.
Neighbors previously told Channel 11 that the traffic island built around the monument is too big and makes it difficult for vehicles to navigate Lowrie Street.
The American Legion indicates that the memorial honors Troy Hill residents who served in World War I.
