McKEESPORT, Pa. — A football game at South Allegheny High School ended with gunfire Friday night.
Just before 11 p.m., a single gunshot was heard near the entrance to the football stadium, according to a social media post by Liberty Borough Police.
The game between South Allegheny and Elizabeth Forward was late in the fourth quarter when players, coaches, spectators and others began fleeing the area.
Within minutes, borough officers and school police officers took a 17-year-old boy into custody.
Police said they recovered a stolen loaded semi-automatic handgun from his waistband.
No injuries were reported.
The game was declared over.
Liberty Borough Police Chief Ralph Marsico said the teen was identified as a student who attends Brashear High School in Pittsburgh.
The chief said after consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, the teen will likely be charged as a juvenile with several offenses, including possession of a weapon on school property and recklessly endangering another person.
South Allegheny School District Superintendent Dr. David McDonald posted a statement online. “We are grateful for the quick response of our South Allegheny School Police officers and the assistance of our local law enforcement partners. The safety of our students, athletes, families, staff and community remains our highest priority,” he said.
