A 22-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon by gunfire that also left a woman and two children wounded.

The shooting was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m., outside the Maple Ridge Apartments on Park Hill Drive in Pittsburgh’s East Hills neighborhood.

The slain victim, Niles Young, died at UMPC Presbyterian Hospital about an hour after the shooting, police said.

A 29-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl who were in a car parked next to Young were also injured by the gunfire, Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said. The woman was shot in her arm and the girl was shot in her foot. Both were listed in stable condition.

Toler said a boy who was inside an apartment was treated for minor injuries after a stray bullet shattered a window.

"Two of the four people were children, so you do have to wonder what's the cause here and, hopefully, we'll be able to figure that out relatively soon," Toler said.

Young was outside working on a car when at least 15 shots were fired from a wooded area, police said. He was struck in the back three times.

The medical examiner said the cause and manner of death are pending.
