TAMPA, FLORIDA — A Florida man faces a manslaughter charge after shooting his cousin in an attempt to see whether a bullet-resistant vest still worked.

Joaquin Mendez tried on the bullet-resistant vest and is said to have wondered aloud whether it was functional.

"Let's see," replied his cousin Alexandro Garibaldi, who then pulled out a gun and shot at him.  Well, it didn't.

Garibaldi initially told officers he'd arrived after hearing the gunshot, but a witness contradicted his claim and he was arrested.

Mendez was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Garibaldi also faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
