CANTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man was shot and killed outside his home in Canton Township Monday morning, according to a Washington County coroner’s report.
State police identified the victim as 57-year-old Scott Taneyhill. His wife had just left their Skylark Drive home with their granddaughter.
Taneyhill's daughter and her boyfriend were home at the time of the shooting, troopers said. They were the first to call 911. Investigators said Taneyhill's daughter and her boyfriend are cooperating and are not considered suspects.
Authorities said neighbors heard gunshots and screaming just after 6 a.m. and then reported seeing smoke.
The coroner said Taneyhill died of multiple gunshot wounds before the house was set on fire near the basement. Taneyhill's body was found outside the house, not far from where the fire was set, officials said.
Police searched a nearby wooded area, but called off the active search Monday afternoon.
Nearby Trinity North Elementary School was locked down briefly, but the lockdown was lifted before noon.
Channel 11 was at the home as a pickup truck with several bullet holes was towed away so investigators could get a closer look at the damage.
Neighbors said they can’t imagine who might want to hurt Taneyhill, who they described as a quiet family man.
“I have no idea why or who,” Stan Kengor said. “He was a good quiet person.”
No arrests have been made. The shooting and fire remain under investigation.
