OAKMONT, Pa. — The Allegheny River at the site of Tuesday morning’s Hulton Bridge implosion has been cleared for river traffic, but it took longer than expected.

Crews were given 72 hours by the Coast Guard to clear the 300-feet-wide navigation channel. However, it took a few extra hours for that to happen, which could result in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation being fined, a PennDOT spokesperson said.

Work to remove debris left behind by the 107-year-old bridge’s implosion continued Friday, as metal remained in the water into which it fell. Enough was cleared for the channel to open around noon, past the deadline.
Officials told Channel 11 News that the contractor in charge of the project ran sonar Friday morning and found debris. The debris, which is not believed to be from the bridge, was removed.
The Coast Guard has not said if any fines will be issued.
Removal of the remainder of the old Hulton Bridge will continue next week.
