NEW YORK — Al Roker has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the TODAY Show weatherman and co-host announced Friday morning.
Roker, 66, said he will be undergoing surgery next week to have his prostate removed.
He said he publicly revealed his diagnosis to spotlight the fact that 1 in 7 African American men, 1 in 9 men overall, will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Roker said he felt fine. The cancer was detected during a routine physical.
Roker will be sharing his journey.
Prostate cancer is the second most treatable cancer after breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
