Officer Fires Shots At Man Seen Stealing From Construction Site

PITTSBURGH,None — Police are searching for the driver of a van who tried to run over a Pittsburgh police officer in Garfield early Tuesday morning.

Police said the officer was on foot patrol in the area of Columbo Street and North Pacific Avenue when he noticed someone loading materials from a construction site into a white Pontiac van.

Investigators said the officer questioned the person and quickly realized that the man was not a construction worker.

"He quickly discovered that the suspect was taking some objects for his own personal use," said Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Tom Stangrecki.

Investigators said the man quickly got into the vehicle and tried fleeing while the officer tried to make an arrest.

"The suspect didn't have total control of the van, but as soon as he started to pull, the officer was being dragged, he [the officer] disengaged," Stangrecki said.

Police said the officer fired shots at the van, but the driver got away. Investigators said the officer wasn't hurt in the incident.
