Pitt's Chevron Science Center evacuated after Hazmat crews called for spill

PITTSBURGH — Hazmat crews were called Saturday afternoon to the University of Pittsburgh's Chevron Science Center for a report of a chemical spill.

The incident was reported about 1 p.m. at the building on Parkman Avenue.

Students told Channel 11 News that there was a small spill in a lab.

"It was very small. No one was injured. There was no danger to anyone," Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

Officials said a lab freezer was being defrosted so that its contents, some of which were kept in Tupperware containers, could be moved.

"One of those Tupperware containers got knocked over, breaking one of the glass containers inside," Toler said.

About 100 people were evacuated from the building until it was deemed safe. They were later allowed back inside, but not on the 12th floor, where the spill happened.
