Pittsburgh Memorial Day Parade

PITTSBURGH,None — All across our area and across the country, people gathered today to honor those who gave their lives for their country.

One of the largest observances was in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield and Lawrenceville neighborhoods.

Military taps played in reverence of fallen US soldiers in many wars and skirmishes. It was a solemn memorial to those who died, the wounded, and all who served.

Pittsburgh's own Jack Wagner, now state auditor general and retired U.S. marine said, "Let's make sure we've thanked those who have served our country. Make sure we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice."

The memorial parade procession stretched for a mile down Butler Street before entering Allegheny Cemetery.

Thousands jammed the parade route to pay tribute.

Henry Dudkiewicz said he was there to watch because, "My brothers were all in there and they fought for the country. It's a beautiful day."

Many retired soldiers showed up like Okley McGriff who swerved in combat missions in World War II and Korea.

"I've come here every year since 1953. I've been in this parade for the last five years. I'm 90-years-old.

The very first memorial parade held in Lawrenceville was in 1937. The incredible turnout of people is proof that Pittsburghers have a great respect for the military and their sacrifices.
