PITTSBURGH — Students at three Pittsburgh Public Schools received free eyeglasses on Tuesday.

Approximately 25 kids from Pittsburgh Woolslair PreK-5 school and both Pittsburgh Arsenal PreK-5 and 6-8 schools were given free vision glasses, thanks to a donation from a Pittsburgh eyeglass company.

The event marked the launch of Chromos Cares, a partnership between Pittsburgh Public Schools and Chromos Eyewear. Daniel Childs, president of Chromos Eyewear, feels that it is his obligation to do more for the community.

"I really wanted to do more than run a business," Childs said. "I wanted to give back."

Linda Lane, superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools, could even relate to it, telling Channel 11 about her husband's early struggles with his vision.

"When my husband was a little boy, he had a vision problem, but nobody knew it," Lane said.

According to the American Foundation for Vision Awareness, up to 25 percent of all school age children have vision problems significant enough to impact their academic performance.

Other schools will be added to the program during the next school year.
