PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police arrested a man and a woman who admitted to buying and using heroin while their 1-year-old daughter was in the backseat of their car, according to court papers obtained by Channel 11 News.
The incident began when officers noticed the vehicle in a parking lot on East Saw Mill Run Boulevard in Brookline Monday evening.
When they approached the car, they saw a woman drop five empty stamp bags out of the passenger-side window.
Police identified the woman as 26-year-old Ashley Smiley.
According to the criminal complaint, the driver, 32-year-old Jason Camerlin, told officers there were more empty stamp bags next to the center console.
When officers recovered the stamp bags, they also discovered a hypodermic needle, which Camerlin told police contained heroin.
Smiley and Camerlin told officers the child in the backseat was their daughter.
When Smiley was searched, police found four open stamp bags of heroin.
According to the paperwork, Smiley and Camerlin told officers they had parked in the lot to use the heroin they had just purchased. They told police they bought the heroin while their daughter was in the car.
The girl was released into the care of her grandmother.
Camerlin and Smiley were taken to the Allegheny County jail. Both are facing charges of child endangerment and drug possession.
