PITTSBURGH — A registered sex offender was arrested Tuesday near the Duquesne University campus after several complaints he had exposed himself, police said.
Authorities said they received several complaints about a man exposing himself near the Armstrong Tunnel. When officers went to investigate, they realized the man, Lester Gilbert, was a registered sex offender.
Gilbert was charged by Allegheny County sheriffs with failure to register as a sex offender after he told the officers he was homeless, meaning he didn’t register within the “Megan’s Law” 48-hour time frame after he moved from his McKees Rocks residence.
Students told Channel 11’s Renee Kaminski that they’re relieved Gilbert was arrested and that it was alarming to have a sex offender living so close to campus.
"That's pretty scary because you never know, like, what you might run into. Crazy people out there,” said Abbie Laughlin, Duquesne student.
In 1994, Gilbert pleaded guilty to indecent assault and corruption of minors.
Kaminski reported that he was arrested in 2009 when he was caught roaming the halls of a Bloomfield elementary school.
