PITTSBURGH — Police have charged a mother with child endangerment and a father with aggravated assault after the death of their 5-week-old baby.
Investigators said the child was taken from a home on McNary Boulevard and died Thursday at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Police told Channel 11's Renee Kaminski that there were two other children in the home who had also suffered injuries from abuse.
Sheena Alston is facing three counts of child endangerment, according to police.
Lincoln Levys is facing three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangering the welfare of children and one count of prohibitive acts, police told Kaminski.
Doctors at Children’s Hospital said the 5-week-old girl had, "been the victim of physical child abuse.”
Kaminski reported Friday that the baby had suffered bone fractures and also had “fresh and old scratches and bruises to her face, torso and back.”
“It’s terrible. It’s terrible. We’re talking about a 5-week-old child,” said Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt.
According to police, Levys assaulted all three children over the past four years.
Investigators said Alton was charged for witnessing abuse to her children, not protecting them and not reporting abuse or seeking medical attention. Police said Alton’s older children are 20 months and 7 years old. Levys is the father of the 20-month-old.
The infant’s exact cause of death has not been determined.
An autopsy was performed on the 5-week-old child Friday. Authorities said they’ll review the results of the autopsy and determine whether additional charges are necessary.
