CLEVELAND — After accepting the Republican nomination for vice president Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence made a surprise appearance Thursday morning before Pennsylvania delegates.

Pence spoke to the delegates during their daily breakfast.

“I just wanted to stop by and tell you that not only, not only is it our objective to elect Donald Trump the 45th president of the United States of America, but we’re going to win Pennsylvania when we do it,” Pence said.

Pence directed his focus toward topics of importance to Pennsylvanians. %

“We don’t need a president who promises to put coal miners and coal companies out of work. We need a president who will advance American energy independence on all of the above, and I promise you Trump digs coal,” Pence said.

Rep. Keith Rothfus commented on Pence’s statement about Trump and the coal industry.

“He’s also got coal in southern Indiana, southern Illinois. Tens of thousands of jobs across the country are at stake,” he said.

Pence’s speech Thursday morning and on stage Wednesday night at the RNC came on the heels of Ted Cruz’s controversial speech, during which he did not endorse Trump.

“There was a lot of tension in the hall. You could feel it last night. But this election is about what is going to happen in November,” Rothfus said.
