WEST NEWTON, Pa.,None — Residents in West Newton said vandalism has become a major problem over recent weeks and the vandals have increasingly gotten bolder.
Channel 11's Courtney Brennan reported that 10 cars were broken into and two homes had windows smashed with cement blocks over the weekend.
Ed Hamilton's truck was smashed with a rock in the middle of the night.
"They got about 9 cars here in West Newton as I understand, knocking windows out and slashing tires," Hamilton said. "They got my truck and they got my daughter's car, too."
Hamilton's daughter's car is in the shop, but his is sitting in his driveway right next to the rock the vandals used.
"They used a big stone on my truck," Hamilton said. "There's $1,338 damage just to that truck."
Neighbors said they are fed up because the vandalism has been going on for two weeks.
It's not just vehicles that are being vandalized. Karen Peto said her house was attacked as well.
"We got up in the morning and I saw that the blinds were going lopsided," Peto said. "I checked it out and the window was broken."
The borough does have a curfew that should be keeping people inside after 10 p.m., but Peto said she doesn't think it's working.
"There's a fire alarm that goes off at 10 p.m. every night. It makes so much noise, but I don't think anybody pays attention," Peto said.
Police have increased the patrols in the area as they investigate. So far no arrests have been made.
