Sensor-based traffic lights to help expedite traffic along Route 22

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Route 22 commuters between Murrysville and Monroeville are set to experience some changes at traffic lights, courtesy of PennDOT.

PennDOT officials are working to make the commute more efficient by placing sensors with traffic lights that will detect when traffic builds up, and will coordinate accordingly.

“Today was the first day I’ve actually went from Murrysville to Monroeville without hitting one traffic light,” said Dennis Sheehy of Murrysville.

Crews were out Tuesday, inspecting equipment to make sure their new technology was working properly.

Along the 10-mile-long stretch of 18 intersections, 53 radar detectors were placed along Route 22 between Monroeville and Murrysville to keep traffic flowing.

“We’re trying to make the corridor more efficient and more reliable so there’s some consistency with your drive time every day,” said one PennDOT official.

The technology has already been implemented in Wexford and plans are in place to make the same changes to McKnight Road in the near future.
