Police were called to Ohio River Boulevard in Edgeworth Friday morning for reports of a man with a gun who was shooting at parked cars.
Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic reported that the shots were fired in a parking lot that was being used by construction crews in the area. The scene is about a mile away from Sewickley Academy.
"They kept adjusting the rear view mirror on his work truck and that was one of the things that was shot," Edgeworth Police Chief John English said.
Police said Smith shot at an electrician in another car, but was not hurt.
“He had fired a weapon numerous times including at someone sitting in their car," said English.
Smith had a revolver and semi-automatic weapon on him, according to police.
Once police arrived, Smith surrendered peacefully. Police said there is evidence that he had a weapon on school property.
The managing company, Mosites, told Channel 11 that all contractors and subcontractors must pass criminal background checks and child clearance checks before starting a job. These clearance get rechecked every month.
"A construction worker suspect has been taken into custody. He is not a Mosites Construction employee. Mosites is the general contractor for the project at Sewickley Academy and they are working with authorities to understand other details," said Jon O'Brien, spokesman for the Master Builders' Association.
Smith is facing several charges, including aggravated assault and possession of weapon on school property.
