PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh road crews are racing against the clock to clear the snow and ice from streets after Thursday’s snowfall.

The city is under a Level 2 snow event, which means the Department of Public Works has 32 hours after the end of the storm to clear 55 square miles of roads. The deadline is 6 p.m. Friday.

While main roads in the city were clear Friday morning, many side streets were not.

One of the trouble spots was Belplain Street in Carrick.

“They couldn't even get the traction to spin their tires,” Carolyn Krachkowski said about the problems on the steep hill where she lives. “They were sliding sideways.”

Neighbors in Lincoln Place told Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic that Ollie Street was in bad shape, even though it was plowed Thursday.

“We didn't see our first plow until 10:30 in the morning, and even after that the roads were still covered because everyone drove on them all morning,” a neighbor said.
