MERCERSBURG, Pa. — A poisonous spider found some shelter in a Pennsylvania elementary school.

WHTM-TV reports this is the third time brown recluse spiders were found at Montgomery Elementary School in Mercersburg.

The Tuscarora School District made the decision to close the school Tuesday after officials met with the district's pest control management company.

The type of spider, a brown recluse,  isn't really native to Pennsylvania.

Penn State University researchers published online that it's mostly from the west and the south.

Last week, school employees found another brown recluse spider in some traps in the library.

It's the first time they found one of the spiders in a teaching area.

Previously the spider was spotted in a kitchen.

Superintendent Dr. Charles Prijatelj says crews are spraying pesticides outside the school and the district plans to fog the entire building. Staff have already sealed cracks in the school's walls

The exterminator has already been called and will become a bit of a regular here.

The spiders are pretty rare in Pennsylvania, but researchers say they can be introduced through cardboard boxes.

A produce box is how the superintendent says the spider first got in.

The superintendent says the staff will be trained on how to prevent the spiders from being around before school starts in a few weeks.

They even brought in an expert out of state to help get rid of them.

Steve Miller, of Home Paramount Pest Control, says the spider bites are usually painless but it produces an ulcer.
